In the Wild

When I'm not teaching: guitars, two opinionated basset hounds, one excellent sidekick named Levi, and the occasional giant pink snail. Click any photo to enlarge.

Proof that the person behind the projects also touches grass — usually while a basset stops to smell every blade of it.

The Person Behind the Projects

Beyond the classroom

The Stew abides. My path to academia was long, winding, and loud. Before heading to the University of Washington for a graduate degree in Political Science, I was a professional musician, parlaying guitar skills I've honed over 25-plus years. I was fortunate to play with and for some great people — and I learned a lot about entertaining a disengaged crowd. I don't perform publicly much anymore, but I co-sponsor the TCC Trinity River Guitar Club, which lets me watch the next generation of rockstars up close. If I'm not on campus, there's a good chance I have a guitar in my hands, annoying my basset hounds — Sadie Mae and Sammie Doo — while they try to sleep. Jam!

I'm married to Dr. Mikaela Stewart, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at TCU, and we have an eight-year-old son, Levi — yes, the same Levi behind the Wheel of Levi in the games library. He remains my most demanding user and my best sidekick. I work for him now.

I also believe The West Wing is the best television show ever made. This is not up for debate, though as a government professor I will happily moderate one.
